What We Do
Closing the Door on Hopelessness and Opening Doors to Lasting Opportunity
Foster youth aging out of care face overwhelming challenges, from homelessness and unemployment to mental health struggles and lack of resources. Without a stable support system, many are left to navigate adulthood alone.
At Sunshine’s Open Door Foundation, we provide practical tools, real opportunities, and unwavering guidance to help foster youth transition successfully into independence. But we can’t do it alone—we need individuals, businesses, nonprofits, and corporations to join us in making a lasting impact.
Together, we can combat homelessness, addiction, teen pregnancy, and mental illness by ensuring that every foster youth receives the support and opportunities they deserve.

Together, We Can Support Youth Aging Out of Foster Care
Career Development
We offer career guidance, job training, and skill-building workshops to help foster youth build confidence and excel professionally. Partner with us to host workshops, mentorship programs, and job shadowing experiences to provide young adults with the essential tools for success.
Document Retrieval – Coming Soon
Lack of access to identification documents, birth certificates, and Social Security cards can be a major barrier for foster youth trying to secure housing, employment, or education. Our upcoming Document Retrieval Initiative will assist young adults in obtaining these crucial documents, helping them take control of their futures.
Living in Color
Our bi-annual dinner fundraiser supports two transformative causes: empowering foster care alumni and promoting heart health within the Black community. Proceeds from this event benefit the Black Heart Association and fund essential programs for foster youth transitioning out of care.
College Scholarships
Education opens doors to a brighter future, but financial barriers often prevent foster youth from pursuing higher education. We award five $500 scholarships annually to help students cover the cost of textbooks and educational materials.
